The Spirit of Georgetown
A Jesuit institution, Georgetown is grounded in a 450-year-old educational tradition inspired by St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. Today, as a consequence of this long tradition, we can identify a number of characteristics or values that inspirit our University and that are referred to in our University Mission Statement, our institutional documents, and our iconography. What makes Georgetown such an inviting and distinctive educational community are these values:
"Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam" - For the Greater Glory of God, the motto of the Society of Jesus.
Contemplation in Action - through prayer and reflection, our very activity can be a way of entering into union with and praising God.
Academic Excellence - hallmark of the Georgetown experience, rooted in the Catholic and Jesuit historical involvement in education as a means to uncovering truth and discovering meaning.
Educating the Whole Person - St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, believed that God is to be found in every human endeavor, in every facet of learning and experience, and in every field of study.
"Cura Personalis" - Care of the Person, individualized attention to the needs of each student; distinct respect for his or her unique circumstance and concerns, appropriate appreciation for his or her particular gifts and insights.
Faith and Justice - as follower of the Gospel of Jesus, Jesuits are committed to the service of faith and the promotion of justice through engaging the social realities of poverty, oppression and injustice.
Women and Men for Others - Georgetown students engage in local, national and international service projects as well as community-based learning courses.
Interreligious Understanding - Georgetown supports flourishing communities in many faith-traditions including Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Orthodox Christian, Protestant, Buddhist and Hindu.
Community in Diversity - Derived from the Jesuit principles of equality and respect for all, Georgetown welcomes and supports a diverse community of students, faculty and staff.
These values are central are central to the identity of Georgetown University, and each generation of students, faculty and staff are invited to engage them in ways that sustain our Jesuit character.
