Biography

Photo of Philip L. Boroughs, S.J.Philip L. Boroughs, S.J. was named Georgetown's first Vice President for Mission and Ministry in the summer of 2003.* In that capacity he has oversight for Campus Ministry, for Mission and Pastoral Care at Georgetown University Hospital, and for developing programs which support the Catholic and Jesuit character of Georgetown with faculty, staff, students, alums and University boards. Father Boroughs serves on a number of University committees including: the Executive Committee of the University, the Mission and Ministry Advisory Board, the Student Affairs Issues Committee, the Advisory Committee on Business Practices, the Jesuit Heritage Week Planning Committee, and the University Jesuits Planning Group. He supports the Board of Regents Mission and Ministry Committee, offers retreats and seminars to students, faculty, staff and alums, and travels widely for the University.

Previously, Fr. Boroughs was Rector of the Jesuit Community at Seattle University, a position he held from 1996-2002, and a Member of the Corporation. In addition, Fr. Boroughs served as Chair of the Higher Education Rector's Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in the United States from 1998-2001. He was elected to the University of San Francisco Board of Trustees in June 1999. Fr. Boroughs has taught at both Gonzaga University and Seattle University. He has a PhD in Christian Spirituality from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, an STL from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, an MDiv from the Jesuit School of Theology in Chicago, and a BA from Gonzaga University. In addition, Fr. Boroughs has extensive background in retreat direction, pastoral ministry in multicultural settings, and ecumenical work with the Society of Friends, or Quakers. He entered the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus in 1967 and was ordained a priest in 1978.
